How To Write Master Thesis

(Theme & Sub-Theme)
(Research Questions)
(Research Framework)
(Research Analysis and Discussion)
(Research Conclusion and Further Research)

http://www.mpt.go.jp/policyreports/japanese/papers/h12/C13120000.html 2000.8.30

Writing a Good Literature Review

What Should My Review of the Literature Look Like?
In preparing the literature review section of your practicum keep in mind that its
purpose is to provide your reader with the information necessary to both understand and
appreciate your research. To understand your research, the reader needs to know:
*the scholarly tradition (e.g.; theoretical perspectives, historical approaches, previous
findings) that precedes you in this terrain, and
*the definition of key terms or concepts.
To appreciate your research, the reader needs to know:
*about gaps in existing knowledge,
*how your approach differs from or expands upon previous approaches, and
*the particular contribution to knowledge that your study will make.
It is important to understand the difference between a literature review (which is what
you are writing) meant to provide a context for a specific empirical study (e.g, a
practicum) and a review article. A review article is a comprehensive summary of the
existing knowledge on a given topic. It organizes, integrates, and evaluates the books
and articles accumulated to date on that subject. While review articles are an excellent
resource for designing your practicum and getting a feel for the state of current research,
your own review is not meant to be one.
The literature in your practicum should be used to explain and justify your conceptual
model and analytic approach. Just as you wouldn’t wear a wool sweater over your
bathing suit, even if they happened to be the same color, your review of the existing
literature is supposed to “match” your own analysis plan. That means if a study you
38
have come across is only tangentially related to the specific question under investigation,
do not include it. In addition, even if a given article is directly related to your
practicum, be judicious in choosing whether to highlight it in detail versus include it in
a list of relevant cites. For example, you can acknowledge a list of articles that make a
similar point in a single sentence. For example:
Previous research has focused on economic (e.g., Jones, 1999; Smith & Walker, 1998;
Walsh et al., 1995) as well as social consequences (e.g., Brown, 1992; Jones & Ryan,
1998) of declining civic involvement.
An effective review of the literature sets up the case for your study and its approach so
well that even before reading your analysis section, the reader on his/her own comes to
the same judgments about what your paper should be doing as you did.
Given that you may not have established your final analytic strategy and variables at the
stage when your first draft of your review is due, plan to revise, revise, and REVISE this
piece as you continue to make progress on your practicum. This will ensure that the
“motivation” and analysis sections of your paper will go together when you are
through.
Finally, remember that a GPPI practicum is intended to have some relevance to public
policy. Provide some history of the policy issues, how they have evolved, and a
discussion of the politics and institutional context surrounding them. You should
explain why this research project is of interest to policy makers and/or interest
groups. You should include a discussion of how these audiences might use the results
of your research. Some papers may have a separate policy relevance section,
particularly when understanding the paper requires knowledge of a complex legislative
history or policy context. Depending on the topic, one might effectively weave the
policy relevance discussion into the literature review. The key is that you reflect on the
policy context and implications of your topic in your practicum.

Tips on Writing an Effective Literature Review for your Practicum
*Work from an outline. Map out a logical plan for how you will get the reader to
understand and appreciate your research question and approach. Avoid letting your
accumulated articles “drive” the literature review instead. The specific aims of your
research should guide the judgments about which articles you choose to focus.
*Be selective. As discussed above, include only directly relevant articles. In addition,
give greater weight to methodologically superior articles than those with design flaws,
unless the point of your paper is to address a particular methodological gap.
*Be current, but pay proper homage to “classics”. Unless your study is explicitly
historical, concentrate on books and articles that are more, rather than less recent. The
exceptions are seminal books or articles which identified or defined the terrain you are
investigating. For example, a paper investigating how unclear role expectations for
step-fathers contributes to the instability of second marriages would need to
acknowledge Andrew Cherlin’s 1978 paper, “Remarriage as an Incomplete Institution.”
*Use reasoning and evidence to tie your points together. Think of the ultimate
objective of the review not as making individual threads, but as weaving together a
garment. Discover the patterns that exist across the studies on your topic and make
logical connections between them. Include counter-arguments and alternative
explanations when appropriate. Use headings and sub-headings to guide the reader
through the material.
*Extract the main findings. While it is OK to give some context for certain studies,
avoid inordinate details. Emphasize the “bottom line” of the articles you highlight so
that the connection with your own study is apparent.
40
*Emulate excellence. Use relevant articles from the top journals in your field to get
examples of excellent literature reviews. Notice the way that these articles relate
previous studies to each other and identify patterns in the literature. They can also be
excellent models for how to segue from one topic to the next and for defining key terms
and concepts.
*Give your literature review a “trial run” with a friendly reader. Get a friend or family
member to read your first draft. Afterwards, see if they can distill the essence of the
outline of themes you used to write it. Realize that if they think it is boring or hard to
follow, your practicum instructor probably will too. No matter how technical the
subject, a well-written piece should be interesting to any reasonably educated reader.

ROUTES TO CHILDREN’S ECONOMIC RECOVERY AFTER DIVORCE: ARE
MATERNAL COHABITATION AND REMARRIAGE EQUIVALENT?

BACKGROUND
[Excerpts from original paper]
Economic Consequences of Divorce
Arguably the aspect of divorce of primary concern to policy-makers is the dramatic loss
of economic resources that typically accompanies marital disruption for women and
children. Mothers and their custodial children experience a roughly 21 to 30 percent
decline in family income in the first year following divorce, depending on the study and
income measure used, while men’s standard of living tends to increase an average of 8
41
to 10 percent (Bianchi, Subaiya, and Kahn 1999; Bianchi and McArthur 1991;
Espenshade 1979; Hoffman and Duncan 1988; Peterson 1996). In 1994, 38 percent of
divorced and 58 percent of separated mother-child families fell below the poverty
threshold, compared to 12 percent of two-parent families (Bianchi and Spain
1996). Beyond short-term losses in absolute and per capita income as well as income
adequacy, researchers find that the income-to-needs ratios remains low in the first five
years following marital dissolution (Duncan and Hoffman 1985; Stirling
1989). However, over the longer term the gap recedes somewhat. For example,
Peterson (1989) found that women divorced for at least 10 years have notably higher
earnings and incomes than recently divorced women.
Routes to Economic Recovery
Previous research has focused on three mechanisms through which mothers are
potentially able to counteract their declines in income following divorce: 1) increasing
their own earnings by entering the labor force or increasing their work hours, 2)
obtaining or increasing child-support from the child(ren)’s father, and 3) marrying men
who will provide additional economic resources for them and their children (see Seltzer
1994). Among these, the weight of evidence has favored remarriage as the most
promising route to economic recovery (Duncan 1984; Nestel et al. 1983; Duncan and
Hoffman 1985; Peterson 1989; Stirling 1989). For example, using the 1984 Survey of
Income and Program Participation (SIPP), Bianchi and McArthur (1991) observed that
children whose mothers remarried or reconciled at some point during the panel had
almost double the income to needs ratio as those who remained in a mother only family
throughout. Further, Duncan and Hoffman (1985) analyzed the Panel Study of Income
Dynamics (PSID) and reported that among women who remarried, family income was
27 percent higher than pre-disruption income in the fifth post-disruption year, which
compared favorably to income growth experienced by couples who remained married
through the same period.
Despite the generally positive implications of remarriage for children’s economic
42
prospects, we know virtually nothing about how cohabitation affects the economic
standing of divorced women and their children. Given that many women cohabit as a
precursor or alternative to remarriage (Rindfuss and VandenHeuvel 1990; Schoen and
Weinick 1993) researchers are increasingly emphasizing the importance of expanding
the notion of “single parenthood” to account for the potential contributions of unmarried
partners (e.g., Bumpass, Raley, and Sweet 1995; Manning and Lichter 1996; Winkler
1993). However, although research interest in cohabitation in general has increased,
the economic standing of cohabiting unions following marital disruption remains largely
unexplored.
While cohabitation after divorce may bring an additional earner to the household, it is
unlikely that his available incomes would be equivalent to that of a
spouse. Cohabitation is highly selective of women with less advantageous
socioeconomic characteristics (Cherlin and Furstenberg 1993; Sweet and Bumpass
1987). There is ample evidence that cohabitation is a distinctive type of union and that
those who live together outside of marriage have traits more in common with single
persons than with married persons (Rindfuss and VandenHeuvel 1990). A recent study
by Manning and Lichter (1996) using 1990 PUMS data provides support for
this. Drawing from a sample of single mother-headed households that included
never-married as well as separated and divorced women, they reported that children in
cohabiting couple families had fewer economic resources than those children in
married-couple families. Indeed, the economic standing of cohabiting families more
closely resembled that of single parents. There are likely to be some important
differentials among cohabiting couples, however. For example, in an analysis of the
1986 Current Population Survey (CPS), Winkler (1993) found that when a single
mother resided with an unrelated male designated as household head, his absolute
earnings were higher compared to similar households where the single mother was
designated as the head. In fact, the income of the former closely resembled that of
married couple families. To our knowledge, there have been no analyses specific to the
economic well-being of the children of previously married women who are currently in
cohabiting unions. Because these women have already entered and exited a marriage
they may be a distinctive group among cohabiters. It is unclear whether the earnings
potential and other assets of these partners would be similar to those of cohabiting
43
males in general, or whether they might more closely resemble those of former spouses.
Moreover, previous studies have not examined the economic well-being of children in
cohabiting families prospectively nor tracked them over time to see how union stability
(or lack thereof) relates to the economic trajectories of divorced mothers and their
children.
Further, we are just beginning to understand how decisions to cohabit versus remarry
may be related to the larger economic strategies that mothers develop to provide for
themselves and their children. Recent research has focused on the idea of “income
packaging” in which income from various sources, including partners, employment,
welfare, and family members is combined (Edin and Jencks 1992, Harris 1993 1998;
Moffitt et al. 1998) to support the family. This perspective recognizes that there are
incompatibilities between certain sources of income forcing women to make trade-offs
of various kinds. For example, AFDC rules which treat the income of cohabiting males
more leniently in the determination of grant awards than the income of stepfathers, may
provide an incentive for poor women to cohabit rather than marry. Moffitt et al. (1998)
documented that states with lenient or moderately lenient policies concerning the
income of unrelated co-resident males had higher rates of combining welfare with
cohabitation. However, through the provisions of the Earned Income Tax Credit
(EITC), when a qualifying child is present, a woman’s losses on the public transfer side
would bemitigated by marrying, but not cohabiting with a low income employed partner
(Burkhauser, Couch, and Glenn 1996). Another potential trade-off facing divorced
mothers is foregoing remarriage in order to maintain child support payments from the
biological father. Existing studies do not provide us with a clear picture of how
children’s economic well-being is shaped by these trade-offs.
Another unanswered question relates to both how non-married and remarried partners
share their incomes and assets. Some researchers assume that cohabiting couples are
less likely to pool their financial resources than married couples (Schoen and Weinick
1993), however, we also know little about income sharing in remarried
couples. Unfortunately, most available surveys, including the NLSY used in the
present analysis, do not provide this information and research on this subject is thin (e.g.,
Citro and Michael 1995). One could speculate that income-sharing would be more
44
common in relationships of longer duration or when the relationship has produced
children (Winkler 1993). It is possible that mothers rely exclusively on their own
incomes in short-term cohabiting relationships (Winkler 1993). Another complicating
aspect of the picture, however, is that by not accounting for the economic support that
single mothers receive from non live-in boyfriends (Edin and Lein 1997) we may
overestimate the relative economic advantages of cohabiting and remarried unions.
